Acting in West gives me a high: Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan, popular for his serious and comic roles in Bollywood, is increasingly making inroads into the western world with projects like "A Mighty Heart", "Slumdog Millionaire" and even an American TV show.

He admits that being an international actor gives him a high.

"It's always an inner wish of every actor to reach out to maximum audiences. I am lucky that the western world chooses me to play roles in their movies and television, whatever language it maybe. It surely gives you a high to be an international actor with quality work," Irrfan told IANS in an e-mail interview.

His first international film was London-based director Asif Kapadia's "The Warrior". Irrfan played a lead in the film that was shot in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. Released in 2001, "The Warrior" was applauded at international film festivals and made Irrfan a known face on the global arena.

In the recent past, the 48-year-old was seen in international projects like Angelina Jolie-starrer "A Mighty Heart" (2007) and Hollywood venture "The Darjeeling Limited" in the same year. He then got a role in British director Danny Boyle's multiple award-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" and is also working in Jennifer Chambers Lynch's "Hisss".

He is now set to feature in American television show "In Treatment". Apart from his overseas ventures, Irrfan has quite a few interesting Hindi films in hand. At the moment he is gearing up for the release of "Right Yaaa Wrong", produced by Subhash Ghai. Irrfan said he had to unlearn acting for the film that is slated to release Friday.

"I had to unlearn acting and act as a real man behind dramatic situations in life of this cop who has to go against his best friend to arrest him. I learnt how to go through heavy dramatic emotions with controlled calmness. Every scene was a question to me as an actor," he said. The thriller revolves around two cops - Ajay Shridhar (Sunny Deol) and Vinay Patnaik (Irrfan). Their intense rivalry leads them on a battle for supremacy.

Earlier, Irrfan has played a cop in films like "Rog", "Slumdog Millionaire", "Gunaah" and "New York". Asked why he decide to take up this role, Irrfan said: "I like challenging roles. Playing a police officer is boring, but playing a human in a police officer's uniform with complex emotions was tough. That was the reason to accept this well-defined role."

After "Right Yaaa Wrong", Irrfan will also be seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia's "Paan Singh Tomar".

THE West Bengal government has been taking several innovative steps to promote tourism. The State has all that is required to make it the most complete tourist destination in India. The snow-capped Eastern Himalayas in the north, the Bay of Bengal and the Sunderbans delta in the south, the verdant plains, the majestic Ganges, the loping hills of Purulia, the red soil in its western districts, forests and wildlife – no other State has such a varied topography as West Bengal. Apart from this geographical diversity, the State has a rich and ancient cultural tradition and a rich historical heritage.

“Our USP [unique selling proposition] is scenic beauty, but at the same time there is a huge potential to attract tourists interested in history, and for that reason we want to place historical sites such as Bishnupur, Malda, Murshidabad, Bankura and Kolkata at the forefront of the tourist map of the State,” Rupen Chowdhury, Director of Tourism, told Frontline. The Left Front government is also trying to develop river tourism in a big way. At the same time, the State government takes care to protect the environment. “The most attractive tourist destinations such as the Doars forests and the Sunderbans are also extremely eco-fragile zones. Our biggest challenge is maintaining the environment in those regions and at the same time promoting tourism there,” he said.

DARJEELING

The most popular destination in West Bengal, particularly among foreign tourists, is Darjeeling. Located at an altitude of 2,134 metres, under the gaze of the majestic Kanchenjunga, Darjeeling has traditionally been referred to as the Queen of the Hills. There are several places a tourist can visit in and around the region – Tiger Hill, famous for its view of sunrise, and Senchal Lake, located just 10 km south-east of Darjeeling town at an altitude of 2,490 m. Another chief attraction of Darjeeling is the journey up the mountain from New Jalpaiguri on the Toy Train run by the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). In 1999, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) declared the DHR a World Cultural Heritage Site. Darjeeling tea is one of the most famous products of this region.

DOARS

Just below the Darjeeling hills, the Doars stretch out – an undulating green expanse of forests and tea gardens, washed by lively rivers and streams. The Doars valley is particularly famous for its wildlife sanctuaries, which include the Gorumara National Park, the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary and the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

The wildlife sanctuaries are the habitats of many rare species of animals, including the one-horned rhinoceros, the bison and the hog deer. The Buxa Tiger Reserve, set up in 1983 to protect the Royal Bengal tiger, is considered the crown gem of the Doars. It is spread over 759 sq km, with the serene Himalayan range around it and the Jainti flowing through the forest.

But the most famous habitat of the Royal Bengal tiger is in the Sunderbans in south Bengal. Located a little over 100 km from Kolkata, it is one of the largest tidal deltas in the world, stretching over 9,630 sq km (of which 4,265 sq km fall within West Bengal and the rest in Bangladesh). Thousands of islands of various shapes and sizes form this delta, which also contains the largest mangrove forest in the world. The region has been declared a World Heritage Site by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

For tourists interested in history and culture, West Bengal is an ideal destination. From Malda and Coochbehar in the north down to the city of Kolkata in the south, West Bengal presents a fascinating range of ancient and diverse traditions.

Located in the plains of north Bengal, Coochbehar was part of the Kamrup empire between the 4th and 13th centuries A.D. The main attraction in Coochbehar is the palace of the Koch King Maharaja Nripendra Narayan . The palace, built in 1887 on a 1.5-metre platform and covering an area of 4,768 sq m, was modelled on the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Coochbehar is also known for its large waterbodies and for its temples.

Another famous historical site in north Bengal is Malda. Although most famous today for its mangoes and green orchards, Malda has a history that dates back to the 7th century A.D., when Gopala of the Pala dynasty made Gaur (in Malda) the capital of his kingdom. Subsequently, in 1198 Muslims made it their seat of power. Historical relics and Islamic monuments from 14th and 15th century Bengal, including the Chhota Sona Mosque, the Bara Sona Mosque, the Qadam Rasul Mosque, Adina Mosque, Firoz Minar and Lukochuri Darwaza, make Malda a fascinating place.

Further down south is Murshidabad, the last capital city of independent Bengal. It was for a while the capital of Bengal until the British shifted the capital to Calcutta in 1773. It was in this region, in 1757, that Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula was defeated by Robert Clive of the East India Company in the Battle of Plassey, which paved the way for British rule in India. The chief attraction in Murshidabad is the Hazarduari Palace built in 1837. It has been converted into a museum.

In the western region of the State lie Bankura and Purulia. Bishnupur in Bankura district has a rich past, which is evident in its architecture, handicraft and music. The place is famous for its musical heritage and magnificent terracotta temples. To the south-west of Bishnupur, at the confluence of the Kangsabati and the Kumari, stands Mukutmanipur, famous for its stunning natural beauty. It is a big tourist attraction.

The undulating forests of Purulia is one of the 16 Mahajanapadas mentioned in the Jain Bhagavati Sutra. The famous tourist attraction here is the Ayodhya Hill, frequented not only by rock climbers but also those interested in mythology, for it is believed that Rama and Sita stayed here during Rama’s 14-year exile.

For those interested in cultural tourism, Shantiniketan in Birbhum district is a must in their itinerary. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore founded an open-air school here called Patha Bhavan. This has grown into the Visva Bharati University, the first of its kind to treat the fine arts of music, dance and painting as subjects of serious study. Shantiniketan also hosts a number of popular annual festivals such as Poush Mela and Basant Utsav.

Festivals in West Bengal are unique in their colour and gaiety, the most spectacular being Durga Puja. For four days every year, the entire State, Kolkata in particular, bursts forth in a riot of colours; lavish pandals redecorate the face of the city; and Kolkata forgets to sleep.

Paradise found in Darjeeling

G Brindha visits Darjeeling to travel on a toy train, savour a cuppa and soak in the splendour of the lofty Kanchenjunga peak.

My sire used to say, “The British have left their legacy not only in their edifices but also in the names of towns and streets.” Perhaps their anglicised tongues could not pronounce the Indian names. But, this twist made them more stylish and aroused some curiosity. Thiruvananthapuram became Trivandrum, Kanyakumari — Cape Camorin, Shaml — Shimla and Udhagamandalam became Ooty. To add to it, Darjeeling was called Dorjeling.
I have three reasons to visit this place. Firstly, because it’s a hill station and is home to a toy train, which was immortalised in the 1970s blockbuster film (I call it a love poem) ‘Aradhana’, in the song ‘mere sapnon ki rani kab aayegi tu’. I watched it my school days and ever since it has been my cherished dream to tour this place. Secondly, the mountains in Darjeeling and lastly, Darjeeling tea (although I am not a habitual tea drinker).

The train journey from Chennai to NJP (nearest railway station) is arduous. Hence I skip it and decide to fly. From the Bagdogra airport, I proceed by road. After three hours, I reach my destination. The first thing, which strikes me is its alien environment. The contemporary culture and the Mongoloid faces makes me wonder whether it is part of West Bengal. Everywhere I find slogans of Gorkhaland and signboards of Gorka Hill Council.

The architecture of the entire region gives credence to this thought. Our hotel, is a century old beauty, categorised as one of the oldest and finest. It is also one of the several colonial remains turned into a hotel. The resort is very close to the ‘chowrasta’ — the town square. It has a manicured garden, which offers great views. Owing to its proximity, we limber up to ‘chowrasta’ on the first day itself. It is lined up with shops, restaurants, curio shops and hawkers. Ponywallahs wait for us. In Darjeeling pony-trekking is the best mode of transport as vehicles are neither allowed nor reachable to majority of places. (this includes the renowned Mahakali Temple and Bhutia Bustia Monastery)

The Kanchenjunga range can be sighted from almost all places in Darjeeling. Cafeteria seatings, sitouts on the ‘chowrasta’, the mall and hotel rooms; all are positioned to get the stunning views of one of the world’s most beautiful ranges. They appear like huge cakes with oodles of icing. “Tomorrow you can have a view, which will surpass all this,” avers our chauffeur.

Architecture and spiritualism
Next day’s wake up call comes at 3.30 am. (The proviso is that we should be there before peep of the day). Swathed in winter clothes we sally for Tiger hills. This is the highest point in Darjeeling. It seems the whole lot of tourists in cavalcades make a beeline for this point. The place is overcrowded with people braving the chill. But we ignore the throngs and concentrate on the spectacle. As the first rays of the sun strike the mountains, their white snow-capped peaks don a warm pinkish blue hue. A breathtaking sight.
On our return, the car stops at Ghoom before a monastery. Yiga Choling Gompa, popularly known as Ghoom Monastery, contains the images of Buddhist deities and lamas, a prominent one being the 15ft statue of Maitreya. Also worth a visit is the Dhirdam Mandir, fashioned in the style of Pasupathinath temple of Kathmandu, which showcases the culmination of Gorkhali architecture and is located just below the Darjeeling railway station.

The post-lunch session involves a visit to a park of exotica. Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park (established in 1958) is home to myriad rare fauna. It is home to Himalayan animals including Siberian tigers, red panda and the Tibetan wolf. The best part of this park is the snow leopard breeding centre. Further above (top of the knoll known as Birch Hill) is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), an internationally reputed mountaineering establishment. Founded under the guidance of Nehru, it had Tenzing Norgay as its director for many years. It also houses an excellent museum on mountain lore, specimens of flora and fauna, traditional attires of Himalayan tribes and a full-fledged school for mountaineers. The Everest Museum (located in the same campus) chronicles the expeditions to the world’s summit.

Another stop is Mirik, about two hours drive from Darjeeling is a perfect place to take a jaunt. Darjeeling is synonymous with tea since time immemorial. Hence, a tour to this hilly retreat will never be complete without visiting a tea estate. Just two kms away from Mirik, our cab steers through a big estate. The mounds, hillocks and all rises are draped in emerald green. The verdancy is dotted with tea pluckers. We are in the midst of an estate, famous for Olong tea. The visit to the factory ends with a cup of ‘garam chai’.
The final day we allot for shopping and a ride on the toy train. We decide to commence it with purchase of tea (for home). Where to buy it? Well, guide books, suggestions by locals, lead us straight to Nathmull’s. Later we realised that the tea here is extremely expensive — Rs 13000 per kg! Other varieties start from Rs 3000.

Eat and shop
The toy train is in integral part of peoples’ lives in Darjeeling. The town seems to start its day as the first choo-choo puffs out of the station. It starts from the heart of the town and whistles past busy markets, flats and apartments. As the engine runs very slow you will be excited to see rail cars (with heads peeping out) running along with your cab. “I become restless if I don’t hear the chug of the carriage even for a day,” says a local.
After the ride, we return to the main bazaar for shopping. It offers items like wind chimes, brass statues and silver jewellery. Later, we have our lunch at Glenary’s the most famous confectioner in the north-east (also has continental cuisine). The pastries are really delectable. Our kids round it off with a creamy ice cream at Supersoft Parlour.

Quick Bites
Momos, thukpa, waiwai (a form of thick noodles either dampened with soup or served dry), churpees - local chewing gums made out of cow or yak milk.
Also worth trying is chhang (made from millet) and tongba - a local beer.

Darjeeling's peak tourist season in Gorkhaland shadow

The tourism industry in the Sikkim-Darjeeling region is staring at a lack-lustre peak season of March-June due to the Gorkhaland agitation. Already, the sector has been losing Rs 5-6 crore per month from October 2009 because of bandhs and highway blockades. While domestic tourist flow has dwindled by 30-35%, foreign tourist arrival is down 50%.

According to West Bengal Tourism Development managing director TVN Rao, occupancy in December 2009 has been at 28%, which is a little higher than 15% in December 2008 but is 10% lower than December of 2007. “The strikes and disturbances are most definitely affecting the region. We cannot say anything now, but if this continues, the peak summer season will also suffer,” said Rao. Occupancy has come down by 40% compared with 2008.

If strikes continue, tourists are going to stay away from the region in summer, says East Wind Holiday Tour director Samrat Sanyal. Almost 65% of the business from tourism is garnered from these peak season months.

The worst hit have been budget hotels. Lower tourist arrivals have forced some to down shutters.

The LTC crowd, which was a saviour for the industry in 2009, has come down drastically as well. This time even locals from West Bengal have given the queen of the hills, Darjeeling, a miss. The local crowd has come down by a whopping 90%. “Darjeeling is a remote place as far as India is concerned. So news regarding it takes time to spread, but as far as West Bengal is concerned, people know every detail and decide about their trip accordingly,” says hotelier Jigar Doshi.

Tough competition from foreign neighbours like Bangkok and Singapore in terms of pricing too has come as a setback to the region. “An air trip to and from Bangkok-Kolkata will cost you Rs 6000 and the same is for Bagdogra. And with all these disturbances in the region, the choice becomes obvious,” says Deepak Gupta of Heat Flexi Holidays.

Tour operators say the situation is the same for the Dooars or rest of North Bengal or even the Northeast. Northeast is still viewed with precaution by tourists and news of Darjeeling is perceived by outsiders as covering the whole of north Bengal, say tourist agencies.

Darjeeling, famous for its toy train, mountain ranges and tea gardens, has always been a favourite with not just the domestic crowd but foreigners too....
